Principal of the studio is Doug Pouwhare. A former NZ and South Pacific Title holder, Doug is a Fellow with the New Zealand Federation of Dance Teachers (NZFDT) and a Member of the Society of Australasian Teachers of Dancing New Zealand (SATD). Doug is also an examiner with the NZFDT and a member of the NZFDT Executive.
Doug is both a national and international judge who travels regularly for dance to Australia, Asia and the UK. A number of his dancers accompany him as well as the principals of our ‘sister studio’, The Beat in Auckland. Studio DKP and The Beat are closely aligned and Doug has worked with studio principals, Viktoria Morgan and Faenza Wanoa for many years.
Doug has trained a number of New Zealand Title holders and whilst some move overseas to further their careers they are always close to his heart. Doug’s dancers are his family and the studio functions as a family unit along with The Beat.
Doug’s goal for the studio is to develop a development squad of young dancers from the Waikato in order to keep profiling competitive ballroom as a viable dance genre. He believes that if we don’t focus on the future then ballroom dancing will be worse off.
Doug is a huge advocate for Ballroom dance in the Waikato and was successful in bringing the NZ Open Dance Championship to Hamilton for the first time in 65 years, in 2015. It has remained at Mystery Creek since! 2016 saw the largest championship in our history with over 200 competing couples from across NZ and Australia. Headlining the Championship were superstars Slavik and Karina.
